'Alexa, Stop' by Andy Morris. Estimated reading time 13 minutes
The time on Mysti’s phone read 02:07, while a collection of late-night love songs played on the smart speaker in the corner of the bedroom. Every now and then, the electronic assistant glowed blue as if it too were listening to the song. Or perhaps it was picking up other voices that she couldn’t hear? Mysti pushed that thought away quickly. The Bangles’ Eternal Flame was providing a welcome contrast to the juddering rain lashing down against the windows. The storm had kept her awake all night and, despite the late hour, she still couldn’t sleep.

He’d been the only grave warden for nearly sixty years, and it was high time he retired. The local council were looking for a replacement for him. Sadly, as he was the only qualified grave warden in the country, finding a suitable apprentice was taking a long time. The trouble was no one really knew what the job involved. Everyone at the council knew his work was important, but no one could say 'why' it was so important.

'Not All Vampires Drink Blood' by Andy Morris. Estimated reading time 14 minutes
Colin would always light up a room with the charisma and energy of a dead fish. Nick had hoped his manager wouldn’t come tonight, but he knew he’d be here and cast his grey cloud over everyone's fun. Colin’s painfully dull temperament meant he had few friends and, so, he took every opportunity to inflict himself upon the rest of the team from the hotel kitchen. Nick already had a headache and didn’t need Colin’s monotonous droning to make it worse.

'Trust Me' by Andy Morris. Estimated reading time 12 minutes
“He was standing right there.” Penny’s hand was still trembling as she pointed down the hallway towards the bedroom. The wardrobe door was open. An avalanche of men's clothes had spilt out onto the floor, preventing her wheelchair from getting around the bed to open the curtains and allow sunlight into the dull bedroom. It hadn’t always been like this. When she’d first moved into her bungalow, about a year ago, everything had been fine. She still worked two days a week as a nurse so, she wanted to keep her hand in while she finally pursued her life-long dream of becoming a writer.

'Your Winter's Song' by Andy Morris. Estimated reading time 10 minutes
For the last few weeks, I've been sat here by the window looking out for you. I've watched the golden fires of autumn slowly give way to the grey canvas of winter, and I knew my wait would soon be over. It seems like a lifetime since we were last together. It always feels like that but, I know you're on your way, and you’ll be here soon. I feel your presence every time I step outside. You’re there in the cold frosty air; in the glow of Christmas lights and; in the excited laughter of children. You’ve been getting closer and more real every day.

'Crossed Lines' by Andy Morris. Estimated reading time 14 minutes
The taxi stank of stale sweat and fried food and, if it hadn't been raining so fiercely the middle-aged businessman would have walked from Totton station to his ‘rustic’ Bed and Breakfast. In his jaded experience, the word ‘rustic’ usually meant being out in the middle of nowhere and falling apart. Why his company had booked this place, he had no idea!

Her heart hammered madly as she sat up straight, staring ahead at the unfamiliar living room and, for a few moments she wondered where she was.
Number 39
'The Brilliant Doctor Kondor' by Andy Morris. Estimated reading time 14 minutes
If asked, The Brilliant Doctor Maximus Kondor would describe himself as a great man and, a genius. He was also rather modest and didn’t like to brag about his superior intellect. Unfortunately, like most geniuses; he didn’t receive the acclaim and recognition he deserved. So maybe he was a little too modest, but, serving in the Earth Alliance one had to conduct oneself with appropriate decorum.
Number 38
'On the Doorstep' by Andy Morris. Estimated reading time 14 minutes
He was still there, the figure in black, lurking in the shadows of the high hedgerow opposite the house. Jeremy cast another glance out of the corner of his eye. Whoever it was hadn’t moved. Overhead a bright full moon illuminated the lane but the watcher’s features were still veiled in shadow. Jeremy had no idea who the solitary figure was or how long they’d been standing there for. He’d become aware of him about half an hour and it was nearly midnight now.

'Help, I'm Stuck in a Toilet Roll and I Can't Get Out' by Andy Morris. Estimated reading time 14 minutes
I was playing pirates with my three-year-old son, Ethan when I witnessed the most bizarre thing ever! We were jumping around on the sofa pretending it was our ship. Every now and then a huge wave would crash into us and we’d fall over and then bounce back up again with much hilarity. We were in the middle of a voyage around the world looking for buried treasure through our homemade telescope. We didn’t have any wrapping paper tubes, which would have been ideal, so we had to make do with a shorter toilet roll tube instead. Ethan was using our ‘mini' telescope to search for desert islands when the strange event occurred.

When I woke up that Saturday morning I had no idea how bad things would turn out. I couldn’t say ‘no’ to him, and that old lady didn’t deserve it what happened…

'When The Lights Go Out' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time 11 minutes
Valerie’s employer, Mrs Forsely, was a formidable woman with a short temper and long memory. She reminded Valerie of the nuns who had raised her back in her home country. Like the nuns, her employer was often cruel and vindictive. Despite this, Valerie had worked as Mrs Forsely’s au-pair for the last four years. Her duties were tiresome and thankless but it was the children that kept her going in the family home.

'Just A Formality' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time 11 minutes
Vincent needed a moment to catch his breath after climbing the three flights of stairs to his patient’s flat. Since leaving the Royal Marines ten years ago his fitness levels had plummeted. He rapped on the door, which echoed loudly in the drab communal corridor.
In his opinion this visit was just a formality: Jeremy had disengaged from the community team. He was unwell and he needed treatment in hospital. It was, however, doubtful that Jeremy would agree with this assessment. That being the case, Vincent needed to get eyes on him and confirm whether or not they needed to call a formal Mental Health Act assessment to compel him to go into hospital.

'Brandywine's Cave' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time 11 minutes
Tap-tap, tap-tap.
The tinging sounds of a metal hammer knocking against stone echoes through the cave like a phantom in the night. It’s as dark as a tomb down here with blackness oozing from the very rock. The strong earthy scent of damp stone permeates the stale air in this narrow crack in the mountain. It opens a little wider in a few meters so I’ll be able to move more freely.
Neither my wife nor I are strangers to adventure sports. Caving and rock climbing have been Elle’s passions for as long as I’ve known her. She takes every opportunity to climb up or crawl through remote places where most normal people would never set foot. That being said, neither of us should be here like this.

Number 31
'Alone' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time 11 minutes
When the strange phenomenon occurred, there had been no one else in the beer garden of The Mailman’s Arms to witness it. They’d had the area to themselves, which had been perfect. A little privacy was the reason Paul had brought young Sarah out to Lyndhurst in the first place. They wouldn’t be recognised by anyone out here, whereas there were far too many prying eyes back home. If people saw a middle-aged teacher in a pub with his sixteen-year-old pupil, awkward questions would be asked.

“No, you go!” Henry stomped up the stairs. Just because she was older than him, Jo thought she could boss him around. So what if it was raining? If that was Wellington barking outside, then Jo needed to get him. It wasn’t his turn, it was hers. His stupid sister was being really unfair!
Number 29
'Here Comes Mr Rabbit' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 10 minutes
Something kept disturbing Luc Martell's sleep. It had happened most nights over the last few weeks, ever since he'd moved into his new flat. The flat was just outside Beaulieu in the New Forest and it had been a great find. It was part of an old converted manor house, known as The Rabbit Hole. The house had been owned by Raymond Button, who had written many popular fairy tales until his mysterious disappearance in the 1950s. Following this, the house had fallen into disrepair before being renovated into cheap flats. The rent was surprisingly affordable for a Film and Drama Studies student, such as Luc, and the owners even allowed pets, so it had been perfect. It was only after Luc moved in that he started having problems.

'What Tom Doyle Saw Last Christmas' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 25 minutes
For Dr Tom Doyle the classic festive image of Father Christmas disappearing down the chimney used to evoke warm sentimental memories. Now, those happy traditional scenes that adorn so many cards and shop windows at this time of year only serve to bring him bleak sentiments that chill his spirit with an icy touch. He had spent the last 12 months trying to forget what he’d seen last year but, unable to shake the disturbing memory, Tom Doyle had decided he would go away this Christmas and leave The New Forest behind him for a little while.

'The Highwayman' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 11 minutes
Becky had never been afraid of the dark, before tonight. It wasn’t just the fact that she was on her own in Ben’s stupid broken-down car, it was also the fog. It had come from nowhere as if it had been lying in wait to ambush her as she drove through the New Forest. The ominous cloud had become so dense so quickly, she’d had to slow the car right down to a crawl just to stay on the narrow country road. Then a short while later the engine had spluttered and then died. That had been twenty minutes ago and she still couldn’t get it started.

Making up with Jen was the reason they’d driven out to Cadman’s Pool in the middle of the night. It was a kind of peace offering Lewis had made to help Jen get some pictures for her photography competition. The theme of the competition was ‘mysterious spaces’ and Cadman’s Pool would be perfect with tonight’s full moon.

'Izzy Heggarty's Strange Night' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 15 minutes
Izzy Heggarty rolled over in bed as the soft metallic chimes echoed through the darkness. At first, they seemed to be coming from very far away and the sound barely registered in her sleeping mind. It was probably just Matthew stirring in his cot or playing with his toys so Izzy paid it no attention. Then the tinkling chimes came again, clearer and louder this time.

At least he doesn’t hit me anymore.
The empty words paraded through Stephanie’s mind on a loop as she curled up on her husband’s sofa. The phrase had become her mantra over the last few days. It was a crutch to prop up her denial and to help see past Giles’ creative outbursts.

Sitting alone on a fallen log amid the scattering of rugged spiky gorse bushes Luke appreciated the sense of detachment that this secluded spot offered. It was a good place to be alone and chew over his situation. Over the last few weeks, Luke had often been drawn to hidden pockets of The New Forest like this one. He wasn't sure why he'd chosen this particular spot. He could have pulled over at any point along the road but instead, he chose this place.

'When Will You Come?' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 28 minutes
Tom Pennywhistle eyed the very old, very worn-looking book with swilling disdain. Even without the faded water-stain obscuring the top right-hand corner, or the spidery creases crawling across the cover and broken spine it was an unpleasant piece of work and without knowing why, Tom wanted nothing to do with it. The sensation was so strong that the poet felt reluctant to even pick it up and he left it where his old friend had placed it on the card table between them.

'Jimmy The Shrew' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 10 minutes
The bedroom was filled with silvery darkness, save for the small pool of light spilling in from under the door. Most of the care homes elderly residents slept quietly, while the hushed whispers and soft footsteps of the night staff drifted down the empty corridors. Although there was no need for anyone to check on Albert at this late hour, the old man was woken by someone tapping on his door. At least it wasn’t another bad dream that that was waking him up, he thought groggily as the knocking came again, louder this time. Suddenly Albert was jolted fully awake. The sound, he realised, wasn’t one of the nurses outside: It was coming from inside his wardrobe.

One melody, in particular, had caught Jonny’s attention. No; it had totally enraptured him!

Samantha Jones or Sammy as she liked to be called never liked returning to her cottage after dark. She had inherited the home from her granny a couple of years ago and just like her granny had done, the cottage also creaked and groaned with age. These sounds wouldn’t ordinarily bother the twenty-two year old. However, because the cottage stood deep in Ringwood Forest the night brought a heavy silence that amplified these sounds.

All was quiet and still in the dim half-light of the deserted walkways and avenues that swept through the Regent Shopping Centre. Yet the crisp December silence was broken by the tiny jingling sound of a small bell. It was coming from the magnificent Christmas tree that stood resplendent in the centre of the arcade.

It had seemed like a great idea at first: Timmy and one of his fellow scouts doing a wildlife survey on the small Channel Island of Mere. Two nights away camping with no adult supervision - Awesome!
Timmy had read up on the uninhabited island prior to the crossing. Mere was made up of rugged heathland and undisturbed woodland. With over forty native species of trees and shrubs, Mere was a private wildlife haven for dozens of species of birds, red squirrels and a host of insects. Timmy loved conservation work and this was going to be a great weekend. That was until Lucas Jones volunteered for the second of the two places.

'Squirrel Hunting' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 5 minutes
This wasn’t the first time Jack had bunked off school to go squirrel hunting. The mountain bikes thick tires kicked up dirt as he raced down the twisting paths, Ringwood Forest. Ahead of him, a squirrel scampered through the trees. Jack pulled on the brakes and watched the dumb rodent for a moment, wishing he had his air rifle with him. Ever since his Uncle Bill had given him the gun he’d been practising shooting squirrels and he reckoned he could easily hit it from this distance. Jack pretended to aim his air rifle and fire at the little bugger. It scurried away into the trees and Jack sniggered loudly to himself. That’s when he realised he wasn’t alone.
This wasn’t the first time Jack had bunked off school to go squirrel hunting. The mountain bikes thick tires kicked up dirt as he raced down the twisting paths, Ringwood Forest. 'The Magic In The Stones' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 18 minutes
Usually, the bright glow from the petrol station illuminated the lonely country lane that snaked its way through the Mendip Hills to the little village of Mid Haven. Aside from the village, the petrol station and the ancient stone circle up on the hillside; there was nothing else for miles around amongst the patchwork of farmers’ fields, untamed woodland and expansive moorland. After dark, the lights from the forecourt stood out like a beacon in the untouched wilderness; a bright shining star in the blackness of the rural landscape.

'Silent Night' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 10 minutes
Christmas Eve. It’s always Christmas Eve!
Dead winter trees dotted about the town square glow with festive colour while a trail of small lanterns light the way from the square to the old church up on the hill inviting one and all to join the midnight mass later that evening.
A lonely figure, lost and forgotten wanders through the crowd. No one pays him any attention or even notices him. Yet he’d been coming here for years, too many to remember. He’s no longer warmed by the sweet scents of mulled wine and roast chestnuts drifting over the crowd of carol singers. He always stays close to the caroller’s because they remind him of the life he once had and yet could never have again.

'Black Anne' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 5 minutes
If only I hadn’t gone up into that old rickety treehouse, I may never have lost my little brother; Harry.
For Harry and me, staying at Gran’s cottage was the highlight of every summer holiday. But now I try to forget those joyful carefree days. Those idyllic rose-tinted memories, warmed by the sweet smell of freshly cut grass, quickly dissolve into the horror of what happened that night in the wood.

'The River Rising' by Andy Morris. Estimated Reading Time: 22 minutes
All five kids were asleep in bed and the home breathed with the brittle stillness that can only be found in the very early hours of the morning. So when the sudden sharp knocking on the front door shattered that silence it brought a sense of puzzlement and mild irritation to Rose. It wasn’t Jean out there because she’d have a key and she’d just let herself in. Jean was running late because of the floods in the town and the initial half-hour wait for her had turned into three and a half hours of Rose being on her own. Claire should have been here but she had been feeling unwell so Rose had sent her home earlier. Rose didn’t mind being on her own, even though it wasn’t strictly allowed. But what she didn’t like was the idea of a visitor coming here at – she checked the time – 1:37 am!
